Organic vs recycled cotton: what is the difference?
Both are lower-impact alternatives to conventional cotton. They work differently, carry different certifications and suit different garments.
Quick answer
Organic cotton is new cotton grown without synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilisers or genetically modified seed, and is certified by standards such as GOTS and OCS. Recycled cotton is made from cotton waste, such as factory offcuts or used garments, that is broken back down into fibre, and is certified by standards such as GRS and RCS. Recycled cotton fibres are shorter, so they are usually blended with organic cotton or recycled polyester for strength. Choose by the garment, the feel you want and the claim you need to make.
What organic cotton is
Organic cotton is grown from non-genetically modified seed without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, on farms certified to organic standards. It is new (virgin) fibre, so it has the full staple length that gives a smooth, soft and strong yarn.
- Certified by: GOTS (fibre through processing and manufacturing, including chemical inputs and social criteria) or OCS (organic content tracked through the supply chain)
- Feel: the same range as conventional cotton, from light and soft to heavy and structured
- Printing: a smooth surface that suits screen printing, including soft water-based prints, embroidery and DTG
What recycled cotton is
Recycled cotton is made by collecting cotton waste, sorting it by colour, and mechanically breaking it back down into fibre that can be spun into new yarn. The waste is usually pre-consumer (factory cutting waste) and sometimes post-consumer (used garments).
- Certified by: GRS (recycled content plus social, environmental and chemical requirements) or RCS (recycled content tracking)
- Blends: because the fibres are shorter, recycled cotton is usually blended with organic cotton or recycled polyester
- Colour: fabric is often made from colour-sorted waste, which can limit the colour range or give a slightly heathered look
- Feel: often a softer, slightly textured hand, depending on the blend
Side by side
- Source: organic is new fibre from certified farms; recycled is fibre recovered from cotton waste
- Fibre length: organic is full length; recycled is shorter and usually blended
- Main certifications: organic uses GOTS and OCS; recycled uses GRS and RCS
- Colour range: organic is dyed like any cotton; recycled can be more limited
- Best for: organic suits most tees, hoodies and totes; recycled suits brands that want a recycled-content story
Which should you choose?
- You want a soft, smooth tee in a wide colour range: organic cotton
- Your brand or program needs a recycled-content claim: a GRS-certified recycled blend
- You want both: look for a blend of organic and recycled fibres, and check that both parts are certified
- You need to make a claim on your website or packaging: choose the garment whose certification supports that exact claim

Questions
Is recycled cotton better than organic cotton?
Neither is better in every case. They reduce impact in different ways: organic cotton changes how new cotton is grown, while recycled cotton reuses fibre that already exists. The right choice depends on the garment and the claim you want to make.
Why is recycled cotton usually blended?
Recycling shortens cotton fibres, which makes yarn weaker on its own. Blending with organic cotton or recycled polyester adds strength and durability.
Can I print on recycled cotton blends?
Yes. Recycled blends can be screen printed, embroidered or printed with transfers. The best method depends on the blend, and we recommend it in your quote.
